Stroll through bohemian streets and taste the famous Travesseiros de Sintra cakes or the delicious Queijadas de Sintra, a kind of cheese-cake typical from the town. Visit Sintra National Palace, considered the best preserved medieval royal palace in Portugal and admire its huge twin chimneys, each measuring 33 meters high. Enjoy the fairytale façade of the Quinta da Regaleira, including its luxurious park of lakes, grottoes, wells, and fountains.

Classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the “Cultural Landscape of Sintra” celebrates the town’s artistic heritage and fairytale architecture, such as the Pena Palace in the hills of São Pedro de Penaferrim. The National Palace of Pena was built in the Romantic Period on the orders of King Ferdinand the of Saxe Coburg-Gotha, who, after marrying the Portuguese Queen Mary II, fell in love with Sintra and decided to build here a summer palace for the royal family. The palace is totally surrounded by a luxuriant park, filled with a wide variety of trees and exotic plants, also built on the orders of the King.

The “Mountain of the Moon,” as Sintra was called in ancient times, will not stop to surprise you. At Cape Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, take your time to breathe the fresh sea air and to take some wonderful photos of the amazing view that the cape offers. Stroll on the beaches of Guincho, and marvel at the Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth) cove.

En route back to the city, drive along the Estoril coast road, linking Cascais with Estoril, and on to Lisbon. Cascais was a former fishing village but it suffered a major renovation when in the 19th century the King choose the town for is summer residence and was immediately copied by the nobility, who built palaces and extremely beautiful villas in the town, completely transforming the appearance of the former fishing village. Nowadays, Cascais is a very lively and cosmopolitan town that still preserves a great deal of its earlier aristocratic atmosphere. Not far away from Cascais is Estoril, a world-famous resort where is located the famous Casino of Estoril, one of the biggest in Europe.
