Exiting from Lisbon, this tour will take you through the beautiful countryside roads of Alentejo up to Évora, the capital city of the region. Topped by an imposing cathedral, Évora is laid out over a gently sloping hill rising out of the huge Alentejo plain. It guards its historic centre with a vast outer wall and represents a valuable cultural legacy that UNESCO has classified World Heritage.

Évora has a history of more than two thousand years old. The Romans built the Ebora Liberalitas Julia and we can still see here their elegant temple. Dating back to the first century, the Roman Temple of Évora is the ex-libris monument of the city and it is one of the most important historic ruins in the country. The temple was consecrated to the Imperial Cult although, during centuries, it was thought that it was dedicated to the goddess Diana and because of that, it was identified for many years as the Temple of Diana.

Centuries later, the Moors conquered the city and we can still feel their influence in the maze of narrow streets and courtyards of the old city.

Medieval vestiges can still be seen, such as the huge Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, the longest in Portugal or the Church of S. Francis with its spooky Bone Chapel. Although Évora is not a city that stopped in time, it definitely developed itself without losing its character.

After an impressive historical morning, it is time to taste the typical food of the region and to delight yourself with a meal in one of the traditional restaurants of the city.

The afternoon is reserved for a totally different experience: a visit to the wine cellar José Maria da Fonseca, one of the oldest and most prestigious wine companies in Portugal. Founded in 1834, JMF sells wines in all continents, namely the Moscatel and the Periquita wines. Our tour ends with a visit to the cellars and a wine tasting of some of the wines made by JMF.
