Lisbon Private Tours
Enjoy a chauffeur driven tour of Lisbon, traveling by private vehicle on a full-day tour tailored to your schedule.
Following a hotel pick-up, a good place to start is the historical area of Belém. Of all Lisbon, it is Belém that most clearly evokes the era of the Discoveries and Portugal´s maritime expansion. It was from Belém that caravels would depart and arrive throughout the 15th and 16th centuries. King Manuel I ordered the construction of the Monastery of Jerónimos (Hieronymos) and the Tower of Belém here as symbols of the wealth and splendour of the time. Classified as World Heritage, they are among the very best examples of the “Manueline” architectural style. (Both monuments are closed on Mondays)
Nearby, you’ll want to try some sweet Pastéis de Belém, the famous cake from Lisbon. Pastéis de Belém are a kind of custard tart whose recipe is one of the best kept secrets in the Portuguese gastronomy. Everyday around 10,000 such cakes are sold from Casa dos Pastéis de Belém located nearby the Monastery of Jerónimos.
Next, explore Downtown Lisbon to learn how it was completely rebuilt in a classical style after the terrible earthquake of 1755 that destroyed the city. Right in front of the river is the famous Praça do Comércio, one of the most beautiful squares in Europe.
After some free time for lunch at one of the many fine restaurants in the city (your driver will give recommendations), go to Alfama, the oldest quarter of Lisbon. Visit St. George’s Castle for panoramic views across the city.
By contrast, the modern quarter of Lisbon at Parque das Nações is a lesson in urban regeneration. The former industrial neighborhood underwent a major transformation when it was chosen as the location for the Expo 98 (World Exposition). Today, it is a privileged zone of the city, with beautiful river views, green spaces, and a wide variety of facilities, including a casino, shopping mall, marina, cable car, and the stunning Lisbon Oceanarium, the largest in Europe.
